I agree that you can just paint the walls if you are helping someone edit their work, and I absolutely encourage that in my Editor's Eye category. (I'm also a teacher.) For an independent magazine, however, each editor has different tastes, and I offer that we have neither the time nor the energy to repaint. I publish and edit Star 82 Review because I love it, and I don't get paid; this is the same situation for many other indie mag editors. We need move-in condition!<br />-AlisaAlisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04649805582936306865noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7380631593644516380.post-4003190029055360282019-10-29T17:11:08.172-07:002019-10-29T17:11:08.172-07:00The house metaphor is wonderful (and reminds me of...The house metaphor is wonderful (and reminds me of my own house hunt in the past), but I suggest using something significant as a deal-breaker, such as the absence of a deck or a poorly placed bathroom. Paint is no reason to reject a house! Just repaint the walls! Full disclosure: I have been an editor for more than 20 years at a computer book publisher, and I'm intrepid in suggesting changes to writers.Andy Oramhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13607272040548101464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7380631593644516380.post-49901554581786540892017-05-14T06:09:33.401-07:002017-05-14T06:09:33.401-07:00Great post, Alisa! For me, the breakthrough in my understanding of the editorial process came from the editors of ARROYO when they sent a status e-mail for a poem I'd submitted and explained the process of "shaping" an anthology. Ah ha! says I. It's a Gestalt. My poem ultimately didn't make the final cut, but I didn't mind because the editors had taken the time to explain their editorial process. That explanation was a gift.Liz Gauffreauhttp://lizgauffreau.comnoreply@blogger.com
