Art Quilt: The Gift Givers

This was actually the first of the hummingbird quilts, and specifically a section of it. The whole busy quilt sat for several weeks, awaiting a retouch or a new touch, which became this crop from the original.

The Anna's hummingbirds in my backyard and I seem to have an understanding. I put out liquid food for them, and they show up to entertain me. Sometimes they are more interested in my scarlet sage bush. Over the years, I have noticed they are absent from late winter to early summer, but I know they will be back. At least I always hope so.

The Gift Givers
18" x 20" (46 cm x 51 cm)
Letterpress printed on cotton; handpainted cotton; decolourant with hand-drawn stencils; Japanese yarn-dyed cotton; machine and free-motion stitching

Details:
The wood type, in two colors, uses the letters, GIFT GIVERS

I painted the scarlet sage bush freehand, then used free-motion stitching to accent the plant.

The hummingbird was a drawing, then a stencil I cut and used with decolourant. Free-motion stitching around it, also. Japanese yarn-dyed cotton is the binding. To anchor all the motion in the piece, I machine-quilted parallel lines.
