Quiltlet: What Garden Is This?

A friend took a little trip to Big Sur, California and found, to her surprise, some textiles designed by the noted designer Kaffe Fassett, and she brought me a sample of one of his commercially printed designs on cotton. His work is bright and colorful, very reminiscent of the 1960s, which makes sense since he was born in 1937, and those would have been some of his formative adult years. Looking over his website, I was intrigued by the knitting in particular, even though I am not a knitter myself, partly because the mixture of patterns have a quilt-like feel, I guess. The colors on the gifted fabric were not exactly my usual palette, but, as I have written before, I like a creative challenge. It was akin to an assignment: now how do I make it my own?

Like this.

I happened to have embroidery thread that matched, so I extended the stitching out from the printed design.
