A 1940s snapshot of my father's mother feeding a bear cub in Yellowstone National Park surprised, delighted, and ultimately disappointed me. It made me think about actions we take for our own pleasure that are not good for others. In this case the feeding of animals in the wild. For the quilt derived from the photo, the pixellation, made with 972 squares, brings the past into the present digital age of ill-advised and dangerous selfies taken by tourists in national parks: another reminder to take care.
Here, the little bear can be seen from any distance; the human blends into the background. We can still delight in the bear.
