Way back in April I made a small quilt, 12" x 12", to donate to the benefit auction for Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), and wrote about it here: The Gift. The auction begins on Friday, September 12, with all the auction items (nearly 400) available for immediate purchase for $1000. After that, the works are divided into three sections (mine is in section 1), and the "buy now" price drops each day (see this link to the SAQA page and the schedule is also below). There is no bidding war. It is first come, first served.

Once someone puts it into their cart they have purchased it. So you take a chance as you wait.
There are many very beautiful quiltlets from which to choose. You will need a Handbid account in advance of the auction. Details for how to apply for one are here. You can then mark your favorites with a heart to keep track of the ones you like. II think it's fun to do that anyway, whether or not you intend to bid.
