Art Quilt: When She Was Very Young

Many materials inspired this project. Keeping my hands moving when I didn't have anything particular in mind, I dyed a batch of cloth and lace purple, then stepped back to see what it would suggest. I had painted linen with a sparkly black fabric paint* several months ago that has been waiting patiently to be included in a quilt. How about me? it seemed to say. That piece got paired with the purple.

From an old photograph I drew the girl dancing and free-motion embroidered it. I hunted up a similar little stencil I had made years ago to add pattern. She's grown now, so I included her two cats. The top border is yet another version of the quarter log cabin pattern.

The quilt became a kind of color study, an investigation. What can purple mean? How does it make a person feel?
