The woman is traveling. She’s been in the sea many times and many quilts before. Here she is waking up from her tree, a dryad, a a nymph from Greek mythology, like a fairy, elf, or sprite. She is connected to the spirit of the oak tree, like our backyard neighbor’s enormous live oak that we both admire and fret about, that shades our yard and provides food and shelter for the squirrels and birds and those we do not see. My new tree stencil is based on the oak. The dryad’s life is said to be connected to her tree, and so we are to protect it and her.
