While looking up another prayer, we found a blessing one says with awe upon seeing the ocean. As usual, there is a debate about which ocean, but it is agreed that one only says the blessing if one has not seen the ocean in thirty days, which I imagine renews that feeling of awe. A great lake or sea can also qualify. As someone who has lived near and is dedicated to making art about the ocean, the concept of a quilt with the ocean blessing designed into it appealed to me.

Two exhibits inspired this quilt.
One was the fabric line "Counter" designed by e bond in her show at Bay Quilts.
Having just visited LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), I had seen an inspiring textile in the new building, a “Ncak,” a woman’s ceremonial skirt made in the late 19th-early 20th century by the Kuba people in the Democratic Republic of Congo which inspired my design.
