A combination of wanting to experiment with different kinds of marks using deColourant, the continuing desire to use up more of my small scraps, and feeding the hummingbirds in my yard led to this quilt. Two deColourant-stenciled hummingbirds from “The Gift Givers” (2025) became the focal point. I imagined how their pencil-thin bills might create lines in the air and wondered what hummingbird drawings might look like.

I “drew” with thread on a piece of [Amazon link] Sulky Ultra Solvy to make the lace coverings for three of the openings, reminding me of spiderwebs, a hummingbird’s hunting ground.

A clue to the marks (other than the stenciled designs): wooden ceramic tools, a fan brush, a bamboo pen, a tracing wheel, a stencil brush, and a sponge.
