A Cloth Book

You can make a substantial cloth book without sewing or gluing by using the Slot & Tab binding.

Cut twenty equal rectangles out of cloth. Place the cloth in a horizontal format. Apply a vertical line of gesso down the center of each.

Detailed instructions for making the structure out of paper are shown on the following pages:
Making Handmade Books, 55-56
Unique Handmade Books, as Pocket Triangle and Diamond Book, 48-51
Creating Handmade Books, 37-39

This is how the book appeared before it became Handle with Gloves: Twelve Readings in the post, "Eva Hesse: Visual & Visceral."

The original Slot & Tab binding was designed by Michael Budiansky.

This looks great and I want to try it, but not sure I,m understanding ...."put gesso down the middle "....do you do this while the gesso is wet ?

Hi Daisy,
The gesso is there for stability, and to help keep the cloth from raveling, so probably best to let it dry first. Gesso dries pretty fast. You could hem it, if you prefer. Thanks for writing!

Thanks for the creative and generous post. I am a novice bookbinder, I was just beginning to take classes with Austin Book Arts Center when Covid took hold. Now I have a lovely shop and am slowly learning the craft. I need some help with resources. What would you recommend? Thanks.
