A Rainbow of Quilts at Peninsula Museum of Art

Since my art quilt, The Hidden Coot, was accepted into SAQA's Regional Prism Play: A Full Spectrum of Art Quilts, I thought I knew what I would see when I walked up to the glass doors at Peninsula Museum of Art. There would be 62 art quilts arranged in color order. And so there were. I loved the impact from a distance.

I had to take in the cumulative effect of the whole scene, then look more closely at each individual quilt. As we had been instructed to do, all the quilts were the same width and length, but made with a variety of techniques. Many incorporated appliqué with raw edges, some had beads and other objects, edges were both bound and unbound. Realistic, abstract, interpretive, expressionistic, geometric, so many styles. One was uniquely made with three-dimensional rolled pieces and a tape measure running through it, apertures the shape of eyes.

I was drawn to the ocean quilt, loving the cheesecloth waves, but I have no idea who made it: no labels with names or titles. The quilts needed to be close together and a label at the bottom would have meant visitors would be crawling around trying to read them, so labels wouldn't have worked. It is possible there was a price/info sheet at the desk, but I forgot to ask. There will be a catalogue, and I will post a link when I hear it is ready.

The exhibit is on view from May 20 - July 17 EXTENDED TO JULY 31, 2022 at Peninsula Museum of Art, The Shops at Tanforan Mall, Space 204 (next to the Hallmark store); 1150 El Camino Real, San Bruno, CA 94066. Check the website for hours: it is open only as long as there are volunteers. The hours are generally 11am to 5pm, but you really have to email them to make sure.

Because my physicist friend was disappointed that the works started in the middle, with yellow-green on the left, and ended with golden yellow on the right ("like showing alphabetical works, but starting with M"), I've arranged a selection of my photos in the ROY G BIV order.

love that they broke with the usual ROYGBIV by hanging the blue/indigo/violets in the center of the space ...the two warm sides moving into the cool middle

Liz A, Interesting! Now that you mention it, it does look balanced, particularly in this space, having the lighter quilts on the sides and darker ones in the center.
